🌪️ This Week In Tornado History
August 19, 1939 - Virginia/Maryland: Thomas Grazulis documented a hurricane-spawned tornado family that moved 25 miles across portions of Virginia and Maryland. It moved north-northwest across the 10-mile-wide mouth of the Potomac River estuary. One person was killed in each state. Near Reedville, a home and a fish factory were destroyed. A man drowned in an overturned boat. Three homes were demolished near Scotland and Dameron, MD. A person was killed in one of the homes. He assigned a rating of F2.
August 20, 1914 - Wilkes-Barre, PA: A brief but intense tornado ripped through Wilkes-Barre, PA. A total of 25 homes were completely destroyed and over 100 others were damaged. Seven were killed and 75 injured.
August 21, 1883 - Rochester, MN: At least three significant tornadoes struck the Upper Midwest on this day; one of these came to be known as the Rochester tornado. This summary focuses on remembering those who suffered in this terrible disaster and how the Mayo Clinic was born from the wreckage of Rochester. The tornado was rated F5.
August 22, 1879 - Biloxi, MS: A waterspout came ashore at the “Sea Shore Camp Grounds” near Biloxi, MS. Five cabins and a bath house were destroyed. A boy was killed. Thomas Grazulis gave an F1 rating.
August 23, 2011 - Chili, WI: An EF2 tornado ripped a 7-mile path through Clark and Wood Counties in Central Wisconsin. Two people were injured. The worst damage occurred near Chili, where several homes and barns were damaged or destroyed.
August 24, 2016 - Howard County, IN: A record-setting outbreak occurred across parts of Indiana and Ohio! It was the largest outbreak for Indiana for August with a total of 11 tornadoes. We explore the other records in our detailed summary. We also get into the meteorology on how this event occurred and what happened in Kokomo, IN! We also have an archived podcast about this event. See video below.
August 25, 1941 - Lincolnville, KS: An estimated F3 tornado moved 16 miles through portions of Marion and Morris Counties in Kansas. Per Thomas Grazulis, “Three businesses and a few homes were torn apart at the edge of Lincolnville. South of Burdick, only a bed and the floor remained on the foundation of a farm house.”
