🌪️ This Week In Tornado History

January 1, 2011 - Noxubee County, MS: 2011 was one of the most active tornado years on record and it started off with seven twisters that traveled through portions of Mississippi. One of the strongest, was given an EF3 rating. It tracked close to nine miles through Noxubee County.

January 2, 1897 - Mooringsport, LA: A possible F3 tornado moved thorugh Mooringsport, LA. It passed through town “like an army of demons.” Two were killed a small home and three other died in another house. Southwest of town, three large homes were destroyed. There was a total of 21 injuries.

January 3, 1906 - Albany, GA: A possible F2 tornado moved along the northwest part of Albany, GA. “Dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed in a 12-block-section of town.” Four people were killed. There were in a rural home. A machinist died in the destruction of a chemical plant.

January 4, 2007 - Lydia-Loreauville, LA: Between Lydia and New Iberia, three mobile homes were flipped and destroyed. Seven people, including children, crawled out of the rubble with minor injuries. Another mobile home was destroyed as the tornado crossed Highway 90. Two of the occupants were killed and three others were injured.

January 5, 1892 - Milltown, AL: A possible F3 tornado moved 15 miles through parts of Chambers and Randolph Counties in Alabama. 14 homes were destroyed. Five miles south of Roanoke, three were killed in homes. Buildings at a college and a church were destroyed in Milltown. “Large areas of timber were leveled.”

January 6, 2019 - Santa Cruz, CA: A waterspout crossed the Santa Cruz Warf in Santa Cruz, CA, becoming an EF0 tornado. It tore 35% of the roof off of the Dolphin Restaurant and tossed picnic tables.

January 7, 1989 - Allendale, IL/Vincennes, IN: Six tornadoes were produced during the late afternoon/early evening of January 7, 1989. The most significant twister of the day hit the small town of Allendale, IL, in Wabash County. Per the Storm Data Narrative from January 1989, “much of the town was obliterated.” Fifty-five people were injured along the 22-mile path.
