🌪️ This Week In Tornado History

April 21, 1921 - Tennessee: An F2 tornado moved from near Tipton, TN, passing through Atoka and destroyed homes south of Brighton and Covington. At Atoka, six stores, a bank, and 20 homes were “reduced to rubble”. A boy was killed in this town.

April 22, 2011 - Missouri/Illinois: Per the SPC Database, 20 tornadoes occurred on this day. The strongest, an EF4 hit parts of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. It reached maximum intensity as it tracked through the community of Bridgeton, just west of St. Louis Lambert International Airport, in St. Louis County.

April 23, 1948 - Iowa:  An F4 tornado moved through Ionia, IA. Per Thomas Grazulis in Significant Tornadoes, “A three-block-long section was devastated at the edge of Ionia. Six homes and a church were leveled and nine other homes were badly damaged.” There were five fatalities and 25 injuries.

April 24, 1904 - Texas: An F4 tornado crossed 28 miles through Hopkins, Franklin and Titus Counties in Texas. Six homes were demolished SW of Saltillo. A dozen homes were struck near Mt. Vernon. North of Mount Pleasant, one large farm house was “blown into kindling wood.”

April 25, 1994 - Texas: A quick-hitting F4 tornado moved 6 miles across parts of Dallas County, TX on this day in 1994. 80% of the Lancaster downtown square was destroyed. 223 homes were destroyed and 227 damaged. 58 businesses were destroyed. Severe damage occurred to an elementary school and a junior high school. There were 3 fatalities and 48 injuries reported.

April 26, 1906 - Texas: An F4 tornado moved slowly at Bellevue, TX. Per Thomas Grazulis, “As the tornado moved into town, it turned to the east and widened to three quarters of a mile. This enormous tornado then engulfed the town, destroying about 80% of the buildings, and leveling many. Only 10 of 200 buildings remained undamaged. Many fires broke out in the wreckage, and complicated the situation.” Total of 17 fatalities and 50 injuries.

April 27, 2011 - Georgia: Just before midnight on April 27, 2011, an intense EF3 tornado moved through central Georgia. The small community of Vaughn, GA was destroyed. Sadly two people were killed and at least 12 others were injured. We have numerous narrative devoted to the Super Outbreak. Find that here!
