🌪️ This Week In Tornado History

January 29, 1939 - Coker, AL: A possible F2 tornado moved northeast from the west side of Coker, AL in Tuscaloosa County. The path length was six miles. A school was demolished. Five people were inured in a home near the end of the path. Another six people were hurt in homes near Coker.

January 30, 1942 - Bristol, TX: An F2 tornado crossed 3 miles through Ellis County, TX. It moved through portions of Bristol. Five tenant homes were demolished near the town. From Significant Tornadoes,' “One of the small homes was carried 150 feet, blown apart and scattered. a woman and her six children were killed instantly. Four other children survived.”

January 31, 1908 - Bowerton-Georgetown, MS: Stats from Thomas Grazulis in Significant Tornadoes: Had a 40 mile path and 500 yard width. Moved E and ENE from east of Delmar to near Bowerton and three miles South of Hazelhurst. Six family members were killed in one of several small homes that were swept away near Martinsville. The tornado was described as appearing wide and low to the ground. Attached is an eyewitness account from the Union Church area found in the Monthly Weather Review on February 17, 1908.

February 1, 1955 - Northern Mississippi: In our detailed summary we explore two tornadoes that are not a part of the SPC Database. One F3 tracked 8 miles from Commerce Landing to Robinsonville to Clark. A 2nd twister, rated F2 hit near Olive Branch & Lewisburg.

February 2, 2007 - Paisley-Deland, FL: A high-end EF3 tornado tracked from Paisley to DeLand, FL on this day. Along the 26 miles long path, 421 homes and trailers were damaged, and 192 were destroyed. Sadly, 13 people were killed, and 51 others were injured.

February 3, 2016 - Fort Stewart, GA: The survey performed by the NWS Charleston, SC, found max winds to be between 105 and 110 mph (EF1). The tornado developed near Gate 7 of the Fort Stewart complex. It moved NE at 35 mph through the center of the base and dissipated near Highway 144. In all, 42 homes had some degree of damage, and 150-200 vehicles sustained damage. Eight unit facilities were damaged as well. Image from NWS Charleston.

February 4, 1971 - Gore Springs, MS: Only three weeks before a major outbreak would hit the Mississippi Delta, a small but devastating tornado event would occur. In the blink of an eye, a dedicated city of Grenada police officer lost his entire family. On January 22, 2023, we interviewed Officer Christopher Columbus Hankins. He confirmed the details of what happened on this day and gave us insight into the outpouring of love shown after the event. Officer Hankins said it took several years for him to talk about the tragedy, and we were honored that he shared with us.
